Accra, October 27, 2023 - The Italian Embassy in Accra recently concluded its 23rd edition of the Italian Language Week celebration, highlighting the rich cultural exchanges between Ghana and Italy. The week-long event, known as Settimana Della Lingua Italiana Nel Mondo, took place from October 16 to 27, aiming to foster a deeper appreciation of Italian culture in Ghana.
Organized in collaboration with the Italian Business Association of Ghana (IBAG), Ghana Italian Women Association (GIWA), and Piccola Biblioteca Italiana, the event attracted esteemed dignitaries such as the Italian Ambassador to Ghana and Togo, Ms. Daniela d’Orlandi, representatives from both Ghana and Italy's publishing industry, CEO of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr. Hayford Siaw, and distinguished speakers including Professor Pierluigi Valsecchi and Prof. Matteo Grilli.
The festivities included engaging activities such as a 'READ Aloud – Rodari’s Tales' reading session for children at the Piccolo Biblioteca Italiana in Accra. This initiative aimed to instill a love for reading among children. Additionally, a workshop titled 'Let's Colour the World with Books' catered to children aged nine to 18 years.
Various thought-provoking events were part of the celebration, including an open discussion on the topic 'Publishing in Ghana and Italy Compared' at the Vidya Bookstore and a lecture on 'Italian Academics Study Ghana.' Another lecture, titled 'Beyond Gianni Rodari’s Books,' was held at the residence of the Italian Ambassador.
Ms. Daniela d’Orlandi emphasized the significance of the event, stating that it aimed to bridge the cultural gap between Ghana and Italy while fostering an appreciation for authors from both nations. She highlighted that the week-long celebration is a flagship initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, occurring annually in October, where Italian embassies and consulates worldwide promote initiatives showcasing Italian culture.
Giola Guerzoni, a consultant for Italian publishers, shared the challenges of finding readers and publishers in Ghana specializing in fiction with compelling storylines. Andrea Ceccarelli, an Editor, expressed joy at being part of the celebration and encouraged Ghanaian publishers to raise awareness about the country's publishing industry.
Mr. Hayford Siaw,
who had the privilege of moderating a lecture by Gaia Stock, Editor at a
prominent publishing group, expressed gratitude to the Italian Ambassador and
the collaborative efforts of various organizations involved in the event. The
lecture, titled 'Beyond Gianni Rodari's Books,' contributed to the enriching
discourse during the Week of Italian Language celebrations.
